{"id":14,"date":"2007-10-19T05:52:40","date_gmt":"2007-10-19T10:52:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ryanburns.net\/blog\/?p=14"},"modified":"2007-10-19T08:22:37","modified_gmt":"2007-10-19T13:22:37","slug":"education-to-find-or-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ryanburns.net\/blog\/?p=14","title":{"rendered":"Education: To Find or To Know?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a debate about whether students should be &#8216;brought into the future&#8217;, and educated with tests such as &#8220;find this information on the internet&#8221;, instead of rote memorization, for instance espoused in <a href=\"http:\/\/sethgodin.typepad.com\/seths_blog\/2007\/10\/the-wikipedia-g.html\">this Seth Godin post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While we want students to be able to find information on the internet or in a library, I don&#8217;t think relying on this exclusively is a great idea.  This is exactly the kind of thinking that leads to the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/archives.cnn.com\/2002\/EDUCATION\/11\/20\/geography.quiz\/\">x% of students can&#8217;t find Atlantic Ocean on a map<\/a>&#8221; issue.  Basic knowledge about the world is something you don&#8217;t always have time to go and look up.
